Does the idea of visiting the dentist cause your stomach to hurt? Maybe you schedule your appointment, but feel too sick on the day of to make it to the dentist. Did you know that dental fear or anxiety is very common for many Australians? That's why we offer solutions at Aberdeen Dental Centre to help you feel more at ease and relaxed during your dental care. Here's what you should know.

What Causes Dental Anxiety?

Understanding what triggers your dental fear or anxiety may help you manage it. Here are a few common culprits:

  • Embarrassment — Many patients feel self-conscious or embarrassed about the condition of their mouths. This can cause anxiety about visiting the dentist.
  • Fear of pain — The anticipation of a dental procedure causing pain may be the source of your anxiety.
  • Bad experiences — Many patients fear the dentist due to negative experiences they had as a child.
  • The unknown — Not knowing the cost or details of a dental procedure might cause feelings of anxiety.
  • Fear of dental tools — Some patients have anxiety about the dental drill or other tools used by the team.
  • Sensory issues — For some patients, it's the sounds or smells of the dental clinic that cause anxiety.

If you can understand the source of your fear or anxiety, you can work closely with your Albany dentist to determine what might help to alleviate those fears.

Managing Dental Anxiety at Aberdeen Dental Centre

If you experience anxiety, we have several solutions that can help improve your experience at our Albany dental surgery.

A Caring Team

Our team of three talented dentists works together, sharing a passion for elevating dental care for our patients. They combine their skills and knowledge to provide a wide range of dental services for Albany families.

We understand dental fear and phobia, and our team works together to create a warm, welcoming environment where patients feel seen, heard, and well cared for. Our dentists will always explain your treatment procedures in depth, so you have a complete understanding of what will happen, which helps to reduce anxiety. We also offer a comfort menu of amenities that make your visit to the dentist feel more like hanging out with friends.

Patients appreciate our judgement-free approach to care. We'll meet you wherever you're at with your smile, with gentle and compassionate treatment, not questions or judgment. Our goal is that you look forward to visiting us rather than dreading your dental appointments.

The Comfort Menu

Are you feeling cold? A pillow and a warm, cozy blanket to snuggle under during your procedure should help. Are you having a longer procedure? Watching your favourite movie or program with noise-cancelling headphones might help you relax. We go above and beyond to help you feel comfortable during more complicated dental procedures.

Our dentists use the best anesthetics and topical numbing gels to reduce discomfort during dental procedures, helping put your mind at ease.

At Aberdeen Dental Centre, we pay attention to the little details and amenities that can elevate the experience.

Dental Sedation

We also offer nitrous oxide (happy gas) sedation at our Albany dental clinic. Happy gas helps to 'take the edge off' for anxious patients with a breathable gas mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen, which we deliver through an inhalation mask.

Nitrous oxide is safe for adults and children to use during most types of procedures, and it doesn't leave lingering side effects, so that you can get on with your day after your dental procedure. It's also safe for adults to drive home after treatment with nitrous oxide.

If you or a loved one feels you could benefit from nitrous oxide during your treatment, we encourage you to talk with our dentists about your options.
