Composite Bonding vs. Porcelain Veneers: What Albany Patients Actually Choose

Have you considered cosmetic dentistry but aren’t sure where to start? Do you have questions about porcelain veneers and how they compare with dental bonding? Then this blog is for you!

Composite Bonding and porcelain veneers are popular cosmetic dentistry options, but patients often choose them for specific needs or goals.

In this blog, we explore composite bonding vs veneers to help you choose the best option for your smile.

What's the Actual Difference Between Bonding and a Veneer?

The main differences between dental bonding and porcelain veneers include the treatment process, the materials, your costs, restoration longevity, and what can be corrected or concealed.

Composite Bonding: Dental bonding can hide chips, small spaces between teeth, and other general flaws. Your dentist applies bonding in a malleable form using the same material we use for tooth-colored fillings. Your dentist sculpts and conceals with this material, then sets it with a dental light. Composite is more prone to staining than veneers.

Porcelain Veneers: Porcelain veneers can conceal everything from gummy smiles to slightly crooked and worn teeth. We apply these tooth-like shells to the front surfaces of the teeth after removing a small amount of enamel.

How Long Does Each One Realistically Last?

A dental veneer can last up to ten years or longer with proper care. Cosmetic bonding may last for several years or as long as you continue to touch up the composite at our dental clinic.

With dental veneers, you must replace them if they are lost or damaged, because we remove a portion of tooth enamel to ensure a flush, natural-looking fit. Veneers are typically more expensive than bonding.

With dental bonding, your Albany dentist can touch up the bonding periodically if it is compromised.

Which Option Fits a Chip, a Gap, or a Whole Smile Makeover?

  • Chips: Dental bonding may be the ideal solution for a chipped tooth because the material is more affordable. And spectacular (veneers) isn't always better for a small tooth flaw.
  • Gap: Typically, we recommend a dental veneer to conceal a smile gap. However, bonding works well in some cases.
  • Whole Smile Makeover: For a stunning transformation, veneers are the best option. They add lustre and a picture-ready smile. However, composite bonding may also work and keep you on budget. It’s important to remember that your dentist can use both options in a smile makeover. One tooth may have a small chip. Another tooth you may want to conceal entirely.

What Does Each Cost in Albany, and Why the Gap?

Typically, cosmetic bonding is less expensive because the material is less expensive than porcelain. It is often considered one of the least expensive cosmetic dentistry options.

Typically, dental veneers are more expensive than bonding because of the material used and the complexity of placement. One way we offset veneer costs in Albany is through having our own on-site restoration lab. In many cases, we can fabricate your veneers right here in our dental clinic. This also means a faster turnaround time.

A consultation determines your final cost, and prices will vary based on the number of teeth you’re treating and the complexity of your case.

What Is the Treatment Process for Veneers or Bonding?

Dental Bonding Process

Bonding is usually a single-visit, direct-application treatment, which means we do not cut or etch your tooth enamel. This also makes dental bonding reversible and easy to touch up.

Dental Veneers Process

Porcelain veneers typically require two appointments and on-site lab fabrication. To cement your veneers, the dentist removes a bit of enamel, so you must consider them permanent. If one is lost, it must be replaced to protect your tooth.

What About Composite Veneers?

Composite veneers sit as a middle option, the sweet spot between porcelain veneers and bonding. They provide full-tooth coverage like porcelain but in resin form, and are often completed faster than porcelain restorations. These veneer types are easier to touch up or reverse.

Cosmetic Dentistry Care and Upkeep

Restoration longevity varies by patient and lifestyle, but there are steps you can take to promote a better lifespan.

  • Brush your teeth at least twice daily.
  • Floss your teeth at least once daily.
  • Visit your dentist every six months for checks and cleans.
  • Avoid biting directly into sticky taffy or non-food items with a cosmetically restored tooth.
  • Talk to your dentist if you suspect bruxism (teeth grinding and clenching).
  • Talk to your dentist about a mouthguard if you compete in athletics.
  • Always report any changes in oral health or damage to restorations to our dental clinic as soon as possible.

A Tip to Consider:

Bonding is not particularly stain-resistant, so you should indulge in tooth-staining foods and drinks in moderation, or be sure to clean your teeth soon after:

  • Dark Wines/Sauces
  • Coffee/Tea
  • Curries
  • Berries
